On Sunday 10th March, we’ll be celebrating Mother’s Day.
You may be wondering what to gift the special mother figure in your life but why not start this wonderful day by treating her to breakfast in bed?
It doesn’t need to actually be in bed but a breakfast created by you and lovingly served is a kind and thoughtful gesture.
If you're looking for more ways to make her day special, explore our selection of Mothers Day hamper range, perfect for showing your love and appreciation.
Things to think about first:
- Tailor breakfast to fit her likes.
This might sound obvious but think about what she’d find special/delicious. It needs to feel a treat and different from her normal weekday breakfast. So do your shopping and get prepared!
- Presentation – so important.
Part of the delight in having breakfast in bed is having it attractively presented to you with those added special touches!
Do you have the right tray? You might want to fit a few things on it. A tray with a rim is a good idea and better still, one with legs!
Do you have a small milk jug? A particularly nice cup or mug perhaps?
The right size coffee or teapot?
Do you have napkins?
- Extras.
Flowers make a lovely addition to a breakfast tray - it doesn’t need to be a big bunch (you might not be able to fit one on anyway!).
A newspaper, magazine or book – for relaxation.
Any small gifts, cards or notes could be added.
- Keep the kitchen tidy - This is just SO important it can’t be overlooked!
The last thing the special person in your life wants after they’ve had their beautiful breakfast is be faced with a messy kitchen!
All your efforts will have gone to waste.
Be thoughtful, clear up!
Now on to those breakfast ideas:
1. French Toast (served with berries, syrup, bacon) – a firm but simple breakfast favourite.
Ingredients (allrecipes):
- ⅔ cup milk
- 2 large eggs
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (Optional)
- ¼ teaspoon ground cinnamon (Optional)
- salt to taste
- 6 thick slices bread (any type will do)
- 1 tablespoon unsalted butter, or more as needed
Method:
- Whisk the milk, eggs, vanilla, cinnamon and salt together.
- Lightly butter a griddle and heat over medium-high heat.
- Dunk bread in the mixture on both sides soaking them.
- Transfer to the hot griddle and cook until golden -3 to 4 minutes.
- Serve hot.
2. Pancakes
Straightforward but so delicious. Serve with simple lemon and sugar, with fruit or bacon….so much choice out there.
Ingredients (BBC Goodfood):
- 100g plain flour
- 2 large eggs
- 300ml milk
- 1 tbsp sunflower or vegetable oil, plus a little extra for frying
- lemon wedges to serve (optional)
- caster sugar to serve (optional)
Method:
- Put 100g plain flour, 2 large eggs, 300ml milk, 1 tbsp sunflower or vegetable oil and a pinch of salt into a bowl or large jug, then whisk to a smooth batter. This should be similar in consistency to single cream.
- Set aside for 30 mins to rest if you have time, or start cooking straight away.
- Set a medium frying pan or crêpe pan over a medium heat and carefully wipe it with some oiled kitchen paper.
- When hot, cook your pancakes for 1 min on each side until golden, keeping them warm in a low oven as you go.
- Serve with lemon wedges and caster sugar, or your favourite filling.
3. Vegetable Frittata
A very tasty and healthy dish. Simple to make yet substantial. Just adjust the quantities to suit the number you’re feeding (the rest of the family might want to join you!).
Use an oven-safe pan or transfer to a baking dish after the veg are done.
Ingredients (feelgoodfoodie):
- Eggs (think about 2 per person)
- Cheese (any cheese will do)
- Vegetables (mushrooms, broccoli, peppers, red onions, asparagus all go nicely)
- Herbs and spices (Italian seasoning works well as do the fresh herbs parsley and basil but whatever you fancy).
Method:
- Sautee the vegetables to soften them.
- Beat the eggs then add the cheese and any herbs or spices.
- Add to the softened veg.
- Bake in the oven until the eggs are set.
4. Toast with guacamole
For a fresh, different and delicious Mother’s Day breakfast. Add eggs if wish.
Ingredients (BBC goodfood):
- 1 large ripe tomato
- 3 avocados, very ripe but not bruised
- juice 1 large lime
- handful coriander, leaves and stalks chopped, plus a few leaves, roughly chopped, to serve
- 1 small red onion, finely chopped
- 1 chilli, red or green, deseeded and finely chopped
Method:
- Use a large knife to pulverise 1 large ripe tomato to a pulp on a board, then tip into a bowl.
- Halve and stone the 3 avocados (saving a stone) and use a spoon to scoop out the flesh into the bowl with the tomato.
- Tip the juice of 1 large lime, a handful of roughly chopped coriander, 1 finely chopped small red onion and 1 deseeded and finely chopped red or green chilli into the bowl, then season with salt and pepper.
- Use a whisk to roughly mash everything together. If not serving straight away, sit a stone in the guacamole (this helps to stop it going brown), cover with cling film and chill until needed.
5. Smoked salmon with eggs
Adding chives and spring onions when scrambling eggs makes a very tasty dish and goes well with smoked salmon.
Serve with a side of toast, cut into dainty triangles.
6. Good old fry-up
we don’t think a recipe is needed here! Choose from or have the lot: Eggs (cooked the way she likes), bacon, hashbrowns, baked beans, mushrooms, tomatoes, sausages, toast/fried bread.
Just try and get the timings right so it doesn’t get cold – eggs are prone to this. Warm the plate first.
Don’t make it too complicated for yourself though - she doesn’t want a frazzled or grumpy chef serving it!
7. Sweet delights
If she’s sweet-toothed she might appreciate a selection of mouth-watering goodies. Think croissants, pain-au-chocolat, pastries and cakes.
Something she’d never do for herself on a normal day - so a real treat on Mother’s Day!
8. Fruit/yogurt/toast
Simple fruit and yogurt makes a great healthy breakfast but it can look particularly attractive if you present them well. Berries and chopped up larger fruits look very appealing served in small pretty bowls. Add seeds or nuts if wish.
And don’t underestimate the beauty of toast – especially if you present in a toast rack! With little pots of fresh butter, jam or marmalade – heavenly!
9. Drinks
One of the most popular breakfast drinks, unsurprisingly, is chilled fresh orange juice but this can look even more delicious if served in an attractive glass. Forget your normal weekday tumbler -find something else!
If she’s a coffee lover, serve a new coffee perhaps. The smell of freshly brewed coffee never fails to disappoint!
Serve a new tea or her favourite, but in a teapot rather than the quick dip weekday teabag.
For a touch of luxury and decadence how about a glass of champagne/prosecco? Just DON’T forget to chill the bottle first.
We hope that’s given you a few ideas for a Mother’s Day breakfast.
It’s definitely the thought that counts but how you present it is important – think first impressions!
The time and effort you’ve put into it will be very much appreciated, making them feel spoiled and cared for – which is what it’s all about.
