Veganism in the UK

According to The Vegan Society, the number of vegans in Britain quadrupled between 2014 and 2019. In 2019 there were 600,000 vegans or 1.16% of the population.

It's fast becoming a way of life for a growing number of people in the UK. The vegan diet is just one aspect of veganism.

What is a vegan diet?

Vegans do not eat foods that come from animals, including dairy products and eggs. It's a diet that contains only plants (such as vegetables, grains, nuts and fruit) and foods made from plants.

Is a vegan diet healthy?

Yes, providing you eat a varied and balance diet that contains fruit and vegetables, starchy carbs such as bread and pasta, dairy alternatives and proteins like beans and pulses.  For further advice on the vegan diet check out the advice from the NHS in their Eatwell Guide which is particularly helpful and applies to everyone, not only vegans.

I'm unfamiliar with veganism. Where can I find out more?

The Vegan Society  provides information on all aspects of vegan living. It is the oldest vegan society in the world. Apart from being informative, it campaigns on various issues and, very importantly, registers vegan products with its Vegan Trademark after having ensured that the products are free from animal ingredients and testing.

What do you put in your vegan British hampers?

Our hampers contain a selection of  good quality sweet and savoury foods. For example, chocolate coated almonds, rosemary and garlic olives, natural sea salt crisps, sweet apple crisps and many more tasty treats to suit most palates and purses - from the delightful British Vegan Treats Box at £31.97 to the splendid Artisan British Vegan Gift Basket at £100.

In several of our vegan hampers we have included wine.

So is wine suitable for a vegan diet?

Vegan wine is exactly the same as normal wine. It's made in the same way using the same grapes. However, after the fermentation process fining agents are used to reduce the cloudiness of the wine. These agents often contain animal products and although these agents are removed, some traces may be present making the wine unsuitable for a vegan diet.

Vegan wine is either natural wine that has been unfiltered or the fining agents used are natural substances such as clay or charcoal. Some vegan wines will say ‘unfiltered' or ‘unrefined' on the bottle. If they don't say, it's wise to check with the producer.

Our delicious Tierra- Merlot Central Valley and the delightful Los Tortolitos- Sauvignon Blanc are both suitable for a vegan diet.

My sister is vegan but her family are not!  Will they still enjoy the hamper?

Absolutely! All the products in our vegan hampers are included in the whole range of our hampers here at the British Hamper Company. They have just been selected for their vegan friendliness. The products, from ‘sensible' chutneys and jams to fun popcorn and chocolate will appeal to all age groups
