Gluten Free Christmas

There is no reason someone on a gluten free diet should miss out at Christmas time. They may well be panicking or feeling despondent about being unable to enjoy the foods they used to and the feeling of being left out is miserable. So we've put together a happy festive selection:

The Gluten Free Festive Food Hamper This includes an attractive iced Christmas cake from The Simply Delicious Cake Co,  Yorkshire crisps, tasty Christmas Chutney (goes well with cheese), sweet and savoury biscuits, Willies Cacao chocolate (essential at Christmas)  and,  of course,  not forgetting a gorgeous fruity Cranberry sauce.

Equally a treat for Christmas, though not specifically with the theme, we suggest:

The Indulgence Gluten Free Food Hamper A wide range of products including olives and an award winning lemon curd.

How have we selected our gluten free products?

All our products have been tried and tested by us here at the British Hamper Company. One of us is a coeliac and is very discerning (rightly so!). However, we ALL try them as we want the food to be enjoyed by everyone and not just those on a gluten free diet. Often the non coeliacs amongst us can not believe the products are gluten free because they are so tasty and ‘normal'!

All our food is sourced from British producers, mostly small.  We have tasting sessions (very popular!) and the foods have to pass the test. Over the years we have gathered together a lovely range of gluten free sweet and savoury food. It is true what they say, gluten free food in the UK HAS improved over the years….the coeliac here can vouch for that!

Are your products labelled as GF?

Our gluten free hampers contain food and drink which is labelled as GF or is from producers who have confirmed their items are GF.

What is Coeliac Disesase?

Coeliac disease is a serious autoimmune condition in which the immune system attacks the body's own tissues when gluten is eaten. It is NOT a food allergy or intolerance.  Gluten is a dietary protein found in 3 types of cereal:

  • Wheat

  • Rye
  • Barley

There are many types of food that contain gluten – pasta and bread being the most obvious ones.

When gluten is ingested, the small intestine becomes damaged and as a result nutrients cannot be absorbed. This causes a wide range of unpleasant symptoms in the individual  (diarrhoea, weight loss and anaemia are just three examples).  The consequences of this can be very serious.

1 in 100 people in the UK have coeliac disease. Only 30% of sufferers have been diagnosed so many people may be struggling with unexplained symptoms.

The only treatment is a strict gluten free diet, for life.

I'd like to understand more about coeliac disease

Coeliac UK is an independent national charity that supports currently 65,000 members in England, Scotland and Wales. It's website (open to all) has a wealth of knowledge about coeliac disease - help with recognising symptoms and getting diagnosed and information and advice on diet and lifestyle.

Gluten Free Hampers FAQ

My friend is gluten sensitive. What does this mean?

Gluten sensitivity is different from coeliac disease. The symptoms can be similar to coeliac disease but there is no damage to the lining of the gut as no antibodies are produced by the immune system, as they are in coeliac disease. Check out Coeliac UK for more information on this.

Is wine gluten free?

Yes. Wine is naturally gluten free as it is made from grapes and not grain. We have a selection of gluten free hampers that include wine.

Can beer be included in a gluten free diet?

Beer is made from malted barley and hops which contain gluten so conventional beer is not safe. However, there are many excellent GLUTEN FREE beers out there now and we have included two tasty award winning beers in one of our hampers, Against the Grain and Scarborough Fair IPA Yorkshire, both from Wold Top Brewery.

Have you any gluten free hampers suitable for ALL the family, including those on a normal diet?

Yes we do! Many of our hampers contain naturally gluten free foods anyway. For example our Artisan Gluten Free Food Hamper contains Yorkshire crisps, the gorgeous Willies Cacao chocolate, fruity Thursday Cottage Jam and moreish Peanut Brittle – apart from the specifically gluten free range of biscuits (which are enjoyed by all, they're so lovely!). Other hampers, such as the Grand Gluten Free Food Hamper, contain fudge, cake, chutneys and olives, all equally delicious.

Is cheese safe for coeliacs?

Yes. Most dairy products such as cheese, butter and milk naturally do not contain gluten. Our gluten free cheese and wine hamper contains an award winning vintage cheese from Somerset, a creamy and sharp-tasting organic cheddar.

How do you send cheese in the post?

We send our cheese hampers and gifts via tracked courier delivery between Monday and Thursday on an overnight 24 hour service. Your cheese is protected within the hamper in a cool bag.

Have you any gluten free hampers suitable for children?

Almost all our gluten free hampers contain products that would appeal to younger members of the family. For example, the Gluten Free Sweet Treats hamper contains two types of chocolate, crumbly fudge and some fun apple crisps. Other hampers include tasty sweet and salty popcorn.
