The British tradition of Afternoon Tea is incredibly special, close to our hearts and worth celebrating. Steeped in history with unrelenting popularity, it has become a timeless, quintessentially British pastime.

So how has it become such a tradition?

The tradition of Afternoon Tea

According to the 19th century author Henry James; "There are few hours in life more agreeable than the hour dedicated to the ceremony known as afternoon tea".

As a British family company with a passion for British artisan produce – we couldn't agree more.

Though tea drinking is recorded from the Bronze Age in China, the occasion of Afternoon Tea did not appear until the mid-19th century.

Afternoon Tea was introduced by Anna, the 7th Duchess of Bedford, in 1840.

Initially a response to her (rather regimented!) state of hunger around 4pm, it evolved into a catch up with her friends and soon became a fashionable social occasion for the upper class.

Nowadays, it's an event for everyone – though there's no doubt it's retained its luxury status and sense of occasion.

Afternoon Tea FAQS

What is the difference between high tea and afternoon tea?

Afternoon Tea includes scones, cream, cake, and tea around 4pm. It began as a hunger buster between lunch and dinner and has since become a luxury social occasion.

High Tea (often mistaken for Afternoon Tea) was a hearty meal with strong tea served immediately after work in the newly industrialised Britain.

Workers didn't have the luxury of stopping at 4pm to enjoy refreshments so waited until the working day was over. Nowadays, many households refer to this early dinner simply as ‘tea'.

What is the difference between a Devon cream tea and a Cornwall cream tea?

A serious topic - a cause for strong rivalry…. Cream before jam or jam before cream?

That's right, the difference is the order in which the cream and jam should be added to the scone. The Cornish believe the jam should be added first with the cream on top - those in Devon believe vice-versa. Which do you think?

Is it only the British that love afternoon tea?

No. Afternoon Tea is a worldwide treat, but almost always because of the British tradition.

Chile, however, have their own Afternoon Tea tradition. This typically includes pies, cakes, cookies, and crepes. Sometimes even ice cream!
