Christmas Movie Night: Top Picks For A Cosy Evening In

27 Oct 2023

We do love a Christmas film!  Just the slightest mention of them has us talking, discussing and reminiscing with excitement!

We spend the year glued to ‘series’ but come Christmas we want the films.

Why do we like them so much?

  • They fill you with festive spirit
  • They’re a great form of escapism
  • They boost your mood
  • They’re heartwarming
  • They evoke nostalgia
  • They’re a great tradition
  • They’re fun for the WHOLE family

We all have our favourites – whether it’s an old classic,  modern humour,  romantic or comedy but we’re all united in the love of the occasion!

Here are our top picks for a cosy afternoon/ evening in the run-up to the festive season:

  1. ELF (2003):

A lovely, good-natured family comedy.  It stars Will Ferell as one of Santa’s elves. So funny you never get tired of watching it!

  1. GREMLINS (1984, the first of two):

A hugely successful dark comic horror comedy. Be entertained by the world of little destructive mischievous monsters who create havoc on Christmas Eve.

  1. MIRACLE ON 34TH STREET (1947):

A family favourite at Christmas, it’s a warm and light-hearted American comedy guaranteed to fill you with festive spirit!

  1. THE NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS (1993):

An animated family fantasy film by Tim Burton, entertaining but possibly scary for the very young!

  1. LITTLE WOMEN (2019):

Adaptation of Louisa May Alcott’s 1868 novel, this is a charming and warm film about the March sisters growing up in Massachusetts during the American Civil War.

  1. KLAUS (2019):

A heartwarming animated Christmas story for all the family.

  1. IT’S A WONDERFUL LIFE (1946):

Considered to be one of the greatest films of all time!

Based on the book ‘The Greatest Gift’ by Philip Van Doren Stern which is loosely based on Charles Dickens’  ‘A Christmas Carol’, this is an American timeless classic.

  1. EDWARD SCISSORHANDS (1990):

An American gothic fantasy drama. An (incomplete) artificial man is taken in by a suburban family. Heartwarming and highly entertaining.

  1. HOW THE GRINCH STOLE CHRISTMAS (2000):

Based on the book by Dr Seuss, this is a very successful  American fantasy film for all the family. Follow the warm-hearted story of the bad-tempered green-furred creature.

  1. HOME ALONE (1990):

Our list couldn’t be complete without this wonderful film!

An American Christmas comedy, delightful, funny, and memorable.

For all the family.

Just a few fun facts before you go:

  • Will Ferell ate so much sugar while filming ‘Elf’ that he had trouble sleeping.

  • ‘It’s a Wonderful Life’ was a box office flop when released in 1946.

  • The tarantula on Stern’s face in ‘Home Alone’ is real. He worried it might sting him when he screamed but was reassured it couldn’t hear him.

We hope you approve of our list of top Christmas Movies.
