The Best Easter Activities for Kids

14 Mar 2023

Our Easter Hampers are popular for celebrating with loved ones you’re not able to spend Easter with.

But what to do with the family you are with over Easter?

Are you looking for fun things to do with the kids over Easter weekend or during the Easter school holidays?

The 2023 Easter holidays for schools in the UK run from 3rd April until 14th April.

At this time of year the weather can be unsettled; we’re very lucky if we get warm sunny or, indeed, dry weather.

Here are our best ideas for Easter activities for kids.

  1. Set up an Easter egg hunt at home

This is a failsafe Easter activity as kids love an Easter egg hunt (adults too actually!).

Easter egg hunts are so easy to do in your own garden or even around the house if the weather is bad.

Firstly, put dogs out of the way! Then, hide the mini sizes of chocolate eggs in various locations, a mixture of single eggs and multiple eggs.

No written clues are needed, you can just give each child a bag or small basket and send them off, whilst you sit back and relax (if you’ve been clever it could take them an hour or more to find them all!).

And if you’d like to add a competitive edge to the Easter egg hunt, weigh the filled bags at the end and congratulate the winner. You could even congratulate the winner with one of our Easter Hampers!

  1. Visit somewhere holding an ‘Eggstravaganza’

Fancy an Easter Egg hunt with a little extra?

There are many houses, castles and palaces offering ‘eggstravaganzas’ this Easter. These are just a few:

This Easter, Blenheim Palace from 7th to 10th April has a lot going on for the whole family. Balloon modelling, circus acting, egg hunts,  a vintage variety show and of course the Easter Bunny.

At RHS Garden, Bridgewater this Easter from 1st to 16th April you can search for mulit-coloured giant eggs hidden around the beautiful garden and win chocolate prizes. You can join in with craft activities and you can play in the 7 acre outdoor adventure playground.

At Hever Castle, Kent this Easter kids can enjoy egg-decorating workshops, egg-rolling and face-painting.

  1. Find a local Easter trail

From the 1st until the 16th April , many National Trust houses offer Easter Trails for the whole family.

An Easter trail is a real adventure for kids!

Each child is given a trail sheet and pencil (just £3 per child) and along the trail there are puzzles to solve, things to spot.

Following the trail through beautiful grounds you stop at activity stations where you can take part in fun Easter-themed activities.

And at the end the child wins a chocolate treat – it’s a great way to spend a morning or afternoon!

Check out nationaltrust.org or nts.org for Scotland.

  1. Visit farms at Easter

Lambing season is traditionally from March to May so there are many farms open to the public at Easter showing off their new additions!

Children can feed the lambs and meet the other farm animals – goats, piglets, rabbits, guinea-pigs and more. There may be tractor-rides on offer and perhaps a milking demonstration to watch. Easter themed activities are also offered.

The beauty of these farms is many have indoor play facilities too, great for inclement weather.

At Rand Farm, Lincoln from 25th March until 17th April, kids can meet the animals and enjoy the outdoor and indoor play activities.

They can enjoy a special immersive Easter show and receive an Easter Egg from the Easter Bunny himself.

At Roves Farm, nr Swindon from 1st -16th April you can race sheep and goats around the track, meet the small animals, have a tractor ride and take part in an Easter Egg hunt and an Easter Trail.

  1. Get lost in a maze

There’s not much more exciting/scary/fascinating than a maze!  And it’s fun for all ages, making it a great family Easter activity.

There are plenty of them around the UK. Some are more complicated than others and some require you to solve clues on the way round.

There’s a brilliant one at Hever Castle in Kent and in Surrey the UK’s oldest surviving hedge maze ,Hampton Court.

A fun challenge for the Easter break!

  1. Ride an Easter Holiday Train

You’ve probably never associated Easter with trains unless you’re trying to get somewhere of course!

There are several delightful small railways in the UK offering ‘Easter Eggspress’ rides for kids. Just board the train and off you go.

Stop at stations and have fun searching for eggs, chicks, bunnies and more along the line. And sometimes kids meet characters like Alice in Wonderland or Little Red Riding Hood.

Spa Valley Railway in Tunbridge Wells, Kent,  Audley End Miniature Railway, Essex and Bala Lake Railway in Wales  are just three of them.

Makes for a pretty memorable Easter Egg Hunt don’t you think?

  1. Host a scavenger hunt at home

How about hosting a scavenger hunt this Easter?  It can be done indoors or outdoors!

The idea is for kids to find and collect requested objects or sometimes just photograph them.

You can adjust the level of difficulty to the ages taking part and it can be  played individually or in a team.

Compile a list of objects you want them to find and/or collect. For example, a stone, a shoe, a leaf or more complex items like ‘something blue’, ‘something with a pattern’ or ‘something that starts with L’.

Objects can be hidden or not, it’s up to you and give a prize to the one or team with the most ticked off. (Our Easter hampers make great prizes!)

Kids of all ages will love it and beg for more!

  1. Visit a scavenger hunt event

If you rather someone else organise it, try one of the scavenger hunts around the UK.

On Sunday 9th April 12-4pm,  join the BucketRace Easter Scavenger Hunt, London (starting at Golden Square Soho). Compete with other teams to find landmarks around London, be challenged by the fun and silly tasks given and win the ‘Crown’!

  1. Create an Easter craft workshop

Keep kids busy with crafty things!

There are plenty of Easter- themed kits available to buy online.

Prepare for your kitchen to be filled with fluffy chicks, Easter baskets and ribbons. Whether they’re making Easter bonnets, bird houses or their own Easter cards, they’ll love it!

If that’s not your thing then look online for organised workshops in your area.

We hope that’s given you some ideas for things to do with your family over the Easter holidays.

And if you’re not spending Easter with your family, send them an Easter Chocolate Hamper instead.

Whether you celebrate Easter or not, it’s certainly a much-loved occasion - it’s an opportunity for families to gather and create memories.

Have fun!
