In 2023, Father’s Day falls on Sunday 18th June but can you guess when the first ever Father’s Day was celebrated?

…It was over 100 years ago on 19th June 1910.

The first Father’s Day was celebrated by an American woman, Sonora Dodd who wanted to thank her father for looking after her and her siblings.

It was made a national holiday in the US in 1972 and soon came over to the UK.

Each year people thank their father figures by giving them cards, Father's Day gifts and hampers or treating them to a special day of celebration.

But even though it’s celebrated every year, deciding what to get your dad or father figure for Father’s Day can be difficult. Many of us find they don’t want anything or already have everything they need.

So how do you show your appreciation?

Fear not! We’re here to help you with Father’s Day gift ideas.

Here’s our list of Father’s Day gift ideas for the man that has everything.

1. Make homemade Father’s Day vouchers

Vouchers are a great option for a Father’s Day gift on a budget.

To make the Father’s Day vouchers, simply take a piece of paper and cut it into a few smaller rectangular pieces.

Then on each piece of paper, write a promise for something that you’ll do together or for him in the future.

You could include:

  • Spending quality time together. You could suggest going for a picnic together or visiting his favourite museum.
  • Joining him for his favourite activities. This could be anything from watching the football together to joining him for a round of golf.
  • Chores that you’ll do for him. You could make him a voucher for mowing the lawn or washing his car, giving him a much-deserved rest.
  • Something personal to him. This could be a compliment, a big hug or something else that you know he’ll appreciate.

When deciding which promises to include, think about things that you know he enjoys doing, whether that’s his hobbies, places he’s always wanted to go to or food he loves to eat.

Each voucher is an ‘I owe you’, a gift that can be traded in for that experience at a later date.

This is a great one for showing your appreciation year-round – a gift that keeps on giving.

And if you’re not particularly creative, many online retailers now sell these vouchers either ready-made or with the opportunity for personalisation.

2. Make a Father's Day food hamper

What can you get someone that has everything? Food!

If you know what sorts of drinks and snacks he enjoys, why not create a little selection for him to enjoy over the Father’s Day weekend?

You could include all sorts:

  • His favourite cheese.
  • A selection of beers and ales.
  • Red, white or rose wines.
  • A chocolate selection box.
  • Charcuterie and deli snacks.

A selection of his favourite treats is a lovely way to show that you value all he does and can be enjoyed across the Father’s Day weekend (or devoured in one go!).

3. Take him on a Father's Day trip

Experiences are a great way to bond with your father figure and give him a sense of enjoyment by trying something new.

So, why not take him on a little road trip?

You could take him on a day trip to one of his favourite places or perhaps a weekend away to a town or city he’s never visited before.

You could even take a trip somewhere more local, here are our suggestions:

  • Take him to a new restaurant or one of his old-time favourites.
  • Go to the cinema together.
  • Take him on a shopping trip to your local high street.
  • Go for a long walk together around your local park or nature reserve.

If the weather is nice, you could take a picnic to a local park and enjoy a camping adventure.

Or if you’re feeling adventurous, how about an adrenaline fuelled activity? There are plenty of fun fuelled Father’s Day adventures to be had from go-karting to visiting an amusement park, or even indoor skydiving!

4. Give him an experience day voucher

There are experience day vouchers for almost everything nowadays covering varying activities, budgets and locations throughout the UK.

The great thing about these vouchers is that they can be used at the time best suited to your father figure (usually within 1 year of purchase) and even exchanged for alternate experiences if he isn’t overly keen on the initial activity chosen.

These vouchers can be for him to enjoy alone or with another person of his chosen and give him the opportunity to try something he might not normally do.

Some of the top experiences for Father’s Day include:

  • Spa day vouchers. A pamper session is the perfect chance for him to kick back and relax.
  • Driving experiences. For the adrenaline junkies out there.
  • Cooking experiences. A great gift for a foodie.
  • Tickets to theatres or shows. These vouchers usually include a choice of shows meaning that he can pick which one he’d most like to go and see.

Have a look at one of the many online voucher retailers for a full list of available experiences.

5. Make him a special Father's Day meal

Treat him to a special homemade meal this Father’s Day with all of his favourite foods.

By cooking something for him, you’re putting in your time and effort to show how much you appreciate him and by incorporating his favourite foods, you’re showing that you care about what’s important to him too.

You could make him a lavish breakfast in bed with a full English, fruit juice and coffee just the way he likes it.

Or perhaps he’s more of a dinner fan? You could make him a decadent 3 course evening meal or even order something in, whichever you choose he’s sure to appreciate some great tasting food.

This is a great way to make him feel extra special and fuel him up for a day of fun.
