10 Ways To Celebrate The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee

06 May 2022 by Sophie White

Read time: 7 mins

Did you know that 2022 marks 70 years of Queen Elizabeth II’s reign?

…that makes her the longest serving British monarch in history.

Her Majesty ascended to the British Throne on 6th February 1952 after the death of her father King George VI.

To celebrate a triumphant 70 years, the nation is being treated to a Platinum Jubilee bank holiday in addition to the UK’s standard bank holidays.

From Thursday 2nd June 2022 to Sunday 5th June 2022, everyone is invited to join in with the Platinum Jubilee celebrations.

With plenty of Platinum Jubilee events taking place across the country (and the Commonwealth), it’s sure to be a huge event.

But how can you celebrate the Platinum Jubilee? Here are our top 10 suggestions…

  1. Attend a Platinum Jubilee street party

A staple of British celebrations dating back almost 100 years, street parties took place all over the country during the Queen’s Coronation and the Silver and Golden Jubilees’, so why not continue the trend?

Get your flags at the ready, pop some colourful bunting outside and get to know your neighbours.

Many roads will be closed to traffic to allow street parties to take place, making room for tables full of picnic treats and homemade platinum puddings to line the streets.

Check with your local council to see if your street will be closed. If it will remain open, you can always set up the party in an outdoor space or a nearby park.

There’s sure to be plenty of food, dancing and merriment – so why not join in the fun?

  1. Enjoy a British picnic in the park

The double bank holiday is a perfect opportunity for a summer picnic in the park.

Prep some snacks at home or get yourself a picnic hamper and something to sit on (picnic blankets are ideal but a towel, bedsheet or even some old clothes will do the trick!) and head out to your local park.

Whether you pack some traditional sandwiches or a Platinum Jubilee afternoon tea, it’s the perfect opportunity to enjoy delicious treats whilst soaking up the sun (hopefully!) and taking in the surrounding celebrations.

Picnics in the park are a lovely way to celebrate the special occasion.

  1. Watch or attend the Platinum Party at the Palace

If you were lucky enough to enter the Platinum Jubilee lottery and win a ticket then you’ll already know about the fabulous events planned, but for those of us who didn’t – you can watch it all at home!

Tune in to the live broadcast on BBC One and BBC networks worldwide to watch stars of stage and screen tell the story of some of the most significant moments to take place over the last 70 years.

Taking place at Buckingham Palace, the event will also feature global music icons alongside a live orchestra.

  1. Bake yourself up a Platinum Jubilee pudding

The Platinum Pudding competition opened on 10th January and invited the nation to create a dessert to honour the Queen’s 70 year reign.

Judged by national treasures, including Dame Mary Berry, alongside culinary wizards, homemade Platinum Jubilee recipes have been submitted from across the UK.

The winning recipe was announced on a special programme on BBC One at 8pm on May 12th as Jemma's Lemon Swiss roll and Amaretti Trifle Pudding.

People across the UK are being encouraged to get baking and enjoy the special pud over the jubilee weekend.

  1. Plant a tree for the Jubilee

To celebrate her 70 years of service, The Queen’s Green Canopy have launched a nationwide tree planting initiative, including the creation of a dedicated network of 70 ancient woodlands.

From schools to community groups, corporate businesses to individuals, people are being encouraged to plant trees up until the end of the Jubilee year.

The project aims to create a flourish of green across the UK, as well as to educate the nation about the best ways to plant trees to help them last for years to come.

A fun activity that celebrates the day and gives back to the planet…why not give it a try!

  1. Commemorate the occasion with a Platinum Jubilee coin

To coincide with the Platinum Jubilee celebration, The Royal Mint have launched a selection of commemorative platinum jubilee coins.

The Platinum Jubilee gifts include an uncirculated £5 coin designed by artist John Bergdahl, which features Her Majesty on horseback and an uncirculated 50p coin in a historic first.

This marks the first time a 50p coin has been issued by The Royal Mint to celebrate an event.

It features the Jubilee portrait of the Queen, with a graphical celebration by designers Osborne Ross on the reverse.

Each coin is presented alongside a booklet documenting remarkable moments from Her Majesty’s reign.

Feeling particularly flush? Go all out with a sovereign or half-sovereign set commemorating the Golden, Diamond and Platinum Jubilee years. Prices start from £1,150.00.

  1. Light a Jubilee beacon

The lighting of beacons has long been a part of royal jubilee celebrations.

Even as far back as 1897, residents gathered on top of churches, hills and beaches to light beacons in commemoration of Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee.

Celebrating a reign longer than any other monarch in British history, over 2,000 beacons will be lit throughout the UK and Commonwealth countries, enabling communities to celebrate her long service to the people.

The beacons will be lit in unison on the evening of Thursday 2nd June alongside the singing of the ‘Song for the Commonwealth’.

To find out more about how to take part visit the official jubilee beacons website.

  1. Sing along to the ‘Song for the Commonwealth’

Coinciding with the lighting of the jubilee beacons, choirs and local communities across the 54 Commonwealth countries are invited to sing along with the ‘Song for the Commonwealth’.

Choirs across the UK are invited to join in song at exactly 9.45pm on June 2nd.

The idea is to mark this special year by bringing voices together from around the globe.

The special song was selected by the winner of a Commonwealth wide competition, which begun on 2nd June 2021.

But even if you aren’t part of a choir, who doesn’t love a sing along?

Available on Saturday 4th and Sunday 5th June, the tea features produce from across the estate including traditional cakes, sandwiches and tea.

Adult’s afternoon tea includes a glass of Prosecco for £35 and it’s just £16.50 for children.

  1. Watch the Trooping the Colour

The double bank holiday weekend not only celebrates the Platinum Jubilee for Queen Elizabeth II, but it also celebrates her official birthday.

Her birthday parade, Trooping the Colour, involves more than 1,400 soldiers alongside hundreds of horses and musicians as they journey down The Mall to Horse Guard’s Parade.

A spectacle of patriotism, the event will feature an RAF fly past and members of the Royal Family on horseback, as well as The Queen watching from the palace’s balcony.

Fear not if you’re not able to see this marvelous event in person, it will be broadcast on television as part of the Platinum Jubilee weekend celebrations.
