6 must see British events this year

03 Apr 2017

Everybody is talking about Glastonbury, Wimbledon, Edinburgh Fringe Festival and Ascot, but there are so many amazing events happening this year, so why not take a step back and experience one of these lesser known but equally fabulous events that are taking place this year.   1. Hadrian’s Cavalry, a Roman Cavalry exhibition along Hadrian’s wall - 8 April - 10 September Bring Roman history to life in a brand new and exciting exhibition celebrating Roman cavalry. Hadrian’s Wall World Heritage Site hosts this exhibition over the 150 mile stretch of the site, and explores over 2000 years of history, providing an insight into the role and daily life of the Roman army’s cavalry forces.  The exhibition brings original Roman cavalry objects into one collection for the first time since they were used, including armour and weaponry. The history and stories come to life with the help of museums, reconstructions, galleries, forts, inscriptions, excavations and not forgetting one of the biggest Roman Cavalry re-enactments ever seen in Britain. 2. RHS Chelsea Flower Show, 23rd May – 27th May Stroll through the stunning Show Gardens; award-winning Artisan Gardens; fantastic Fresh Gardens; and a host of incredible floral displays in one of the world’s greatest and most prestigious flower shows at the Royal Hospital Chelsea. The show attracts over 150,000 visitors every year and gives the opportunity to be inspired by the spectacular horticultural displays and garden trends put together by world renowned garden designers, florists and specialists. From rare flowers to contemporary gardens, gardening gadgets to striking sculptures, this show provides constant ideas, art and colour with every step. 3. Bristol’s International Balloon fiesta, 10th – 13th August Europe’s largest hot air balloon event is the perfect place for family fun. With the sky sprinkled with more than 150 hot air balloons floating against the back drop of the beautiful morning sky, it’s quite simply a sensational scene and you are quite welcome to enjoy a picnic or bbq on the picturesque parkland underneath the pretty sky. Not satisfied taking in the view from the ground? Then take a trip in one of the many balloons to be completely amongst all the action. As if that wasn’t enough! The arena is filled with great food stands, firework displays fairground rides and entertainment. The best part – it’s totally free! The Enchanted Forest Light Event - Perthshire, 29th Sept – 30th October A totally magical and fantastical light and sound show, set in the middle of Faskally Wood in Perthshire, Scotland. The event combines creativity with music and visuals to create a multi-award winning show which takes you on a path round the forest. With a host of visual mechanics, digital artists, lighting and sound designers using their unique creativity to put together a total showstopper, it’s clear to see why this event has swept up loads of dazzling awards. 5. Nottingham Goose Fair, 4th – 8th October 2017 Open throughout the day (on most days), until late evening, the Nottingham Goose Fair attracts hundreds of thousands visitors annually and provides hours and hours of entertainment with over 500 attractions for all ages. Don’t be fooled by the name, it’s one of Europe's largest travelling fairs, and covers everything from traditional rides to fun-houses, kids rides to thrill-seeker rides, Waltzers, Dodgems, Helter Skelters and of course no fair is complete without Hook a Ducks! Dotted around all the attractions are numerous food stands offering the classic fairground food from candy floss to hot dogs, as well as stands serving food from all over the world like Spanish churros and Chinese food. Admission is free, so you just pay for the rides/attractions/food that you want. Sounds pretty fair to me… 6. Scampton Airshow, 9-10 September In the beautiful county of Lincolnshire (home of The British Hamper Company!) Scampton (home of the Red Arrows) hosts this new and improved airshow to raise funds for the RAF Charitable Trust. A fun, family friendly event spanning over two days with both flying and static displays, a wide variety of modern and historic aircraft, fun interactive zones for children, activities, history, exhibitions and stalls there is something there to suit the whole family. Need to be tempted more? Children under 16 are completely free with an adult ticket holder.
