Our Top Hampers For Treating New Parents

17 Aug 2021

*This article was updated on 28/03/2024*

The birth of a new baby is a momentous occasion, a time for great joy and celebration.

Before we list our top 5 gifts for new parents, let’s have a quick look at how births are celebrated around the world…

UK & Ireland

Around 2 in 3 expectant mothers enjoy a baby shower before birth.

A baby shower – a relatively new concept - is a party held to celebrate the upcoming birth of a baby.

A fun and relaxed occasion, friends and family are invited and congratulation gifts for expecting parents are given.

Many families still practice the tradition of crossing the baby’s palm with silver.

A silver coin is placed in the baby’s hand (briefly!) If the baby grips it tightly it means the baby will be frugal with money but if the baby drops it he/she won’t be any good with money!

And ‘wetting the baby’s head’ (comes from the Christian Baptism ceremony) is very popular. After the birth people head to the pub for a celebratory drink and to congratulate the father!

Malaysia

New mums spend 44 days sitting by a fire applying hot oils and stones to their bodies to aid recovery. Very precise!

Netherlands

New parents offer guests who come to visit the baby a snack of cookies with butter and liquorice coated with either blue or pink.

Pakistan

On the 7th, 14th or 21st day a traditional naming ceremony is held. Many gifts are given to the baby.

Brazil

Expectant parents prepare gift baskets to give to those who visit after delivery.

These contain candles, notepads, tiny bottles of perfume and much more, with a message thanking the person for coming.

Finland

All new mothers (since 1949) are given a maternity care package from the government containing many essentials, the principle being that all babies should have an equal start in life.

China

When a baby is one month old the parents host a Full Moon Ceremony.

Gifts are bought along and guests return home with red dyed eggs – red for happiness, oval for longevity and the egg representing the changing process of life.

Jamaica

In many cultures, including in Jamaica, new mums bury the placenta after birth as a symbol of the baby’s connection to the earth.

The area is then planted with roses and other plants.
